Project Background –
Telecom Component Cooling in High Temperature
A Hong Kong-based telecom systems company approached RIGID with a critical cooling requirement for one of its latest infrastructure projects. The challenge involved maintaining a stable and safe operating temperature within a sealed outdoor cabinet measuring 0.2 cubic meters. This cabinet houses sensitive electronic equipment that generates up to 400W of heat, and it operates in a harsh ambient environment of 55°C. The existing cooling solution caused internal temperatures to exceed 60°C, far above the acceptable limit. The customer’s target is to bring the internal cabinet temperature down to 10°C to ensure system reliability and prevent overheating.
To address this need, the customer selected RIGID’s Micro DC Aircon – Model DV3830E-AC, a compact and energy-efficient cooling unit specially designed for outdoor telecom applications. The Micro DC Aircon features direct active air cooling, which provides highly efficient thermal management in confined spaces. Operating on 48V DC power, it ensures reliable performance even during power outages, thanks to built-in free cooling backup capability.

How Micro DC Aircon Works in Telecom System
RIGID’s Micro DC Aircon is a compact, energy-efficient air-cooling system engineered to protect sensitive telecom electronics from overheating, particularly in sealed outdoor cabinets exposed to high ambient temperatures.
Here’s how it works in the system:
-
Heat Monitoring
Electronic components inside the sealed cabinet generate heat during operation. A built-in temperature sensor monitors the internal air temperature in real time. -
Cooling Activation
When the temperature exceeds the set threshold, the Micro DC Aircon automatically activates. The system uses a capillary tube expansion device, enabling a reliable and compact refrigeration cycle driven by a miniature BLDC rotary compressor, operating on 48V DC power. -
Refrigeration Cycle
-
The evaporator coil located inside the cabinet absorbs heat from the internal air.
-
The refrigerant evaporates, carrying the heat away.
-
The compressor compresses the refrigerant vapor and sends it to the condenser, where heat is released to the outside.
-
The cooled refrigerant returns through the capillary tube, and the cycle repeats.
-
-
Air Circulation
Cool air is distributed evenly within the cabinet through side air ports, ensuring stable operation of the electronic equipment. -
Energy Efficiency & Backup Power
The unit’s DC-powered design minimizes energy consumption and is ideal for solar-powered or battery-supported systems. In case of a power outage or when deployed in remote, off-grid locations, the unit can continue operating on battery power, ensuring uninterrupted protection.
